JUDGES AT CRUFTS 2026

Judge - Kate McCartney

(Dog & Bitch Championships)

It is not often I find myself lost for words, but when I received “that” email, I was truly and utterly gobsmacked. So many emotions washed over me in a single reading—shock, surprise, being completely overwhelmed, absolutely chuffed to bits, and, above all, an indescribable excitement. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the RKC and the Crufts Committee for this very special invitation. It is a tremendous honour to be asked, and I believe I may have set the record for the fastest reply to a judging invitation in history!

My journey began at Coatbridge DTC, where I met my good friend John Clark. After much pleading, my parents finally relented and allowed me to have a dog of my own—a German Shepherd named Sophie. A few shows in, with Shona (McCracken) as my driver, and I was completely hooked on the world of obedience.

Throughout the years, I have been fortunate enough to share my life with some truly fantastic dogs. Many of them have taken me to the dizzy heights of ticket, and my handsome and clever Dodge even managed to carry me to the dizzy heights of Crufts Obedience Championships. Now, I am a member of Lisburn & District DTC, where I train the competitive obedience class. Moving from my beloved Scotland to Lisburn was a huge step, but the friends I have made there have made the transition much easier.

I have been judging tickets since 2006, awarding my first ticket to the outstanding team of Herbie and Jazz. Over the years, I have had the privilege and joy of judging the Crufts World Cup—though it is a shame this event no longer takes place—as well as the Crufts Obreedience Final, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Judging at Crufts is a world apart from my new role as Crufts Chief Steward. For this year, I have passed the baton to my long suffering handsome husband Michael, and I know he will be fab as always. Although I would have loved for him to be part of my own team, it simply is not possible. I am incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by friends, both old and new, who I am confident will perform their roles seamlessly, allowing me to focus on the task at hand.

Good luck to everyone who has the good fortune to be qualified for 2026—I hope you enjoy your experience as much as I intend to. It is an immense honour to be judging the “best of the best” at the very best dog show in the world.

(Inter Regionals - Obedience)

I was born into Obedience, with a wonderful Mum, who had been competing since the late 1940s, and a lovely Dad who probably started competing in the late fifties. They met after a very different “Inter-Regional” event: A North vs South Match! Mum’s dog had failed scent, causing the Southern Team to lose and she’d been left in the bar by herself – the others went off to lick their wounds! Dad said he’d buy her a drink… and the rest was History!

My first show was a very different Crufts, 1965 in Olympia, London. It was held in February back in those days – and being a January baby, I was just about a month old. Mum worked her dog in the Championships that year and unbelievably, she was placed 2nd!!!

I’ve been competing in Obedience “properly” since the age of 12, when I got my first dog, a Border Collie I called ‘Flax’, although I had tried hard to compete with our rescued Jack Russell girl, Mini, when I was just 7… Mini knew I was punching well above my weight and after leaving me in the middle of heelwork to go mouse hunting, I decided to let Mum take over. I have so far competed with 10 dogs but only count 9 as ‘my own’ as one was my husband’s Dobermann. I have owned and worked a Jack Russell, 2 German Shepherds and 6 Collies. I have qualified 3 dogs up to Championship C – my first GSD, Tim, as well as Della and Joey. So far only Della has become a Champion but I hope I still have time on my side!!!

I’ve been judging since I was about 17 or 18 and I am qualified to up to Championship C. As well as in the UK, I’ve judged in Holland and Guernsey too – both wonderful experiences. I also judged the Obedience section of a YKC Triathlon event at Crufts back in 2004.
I enjoy judging and always try and do my ‘fair share’ during a competition year, as I feel it’s only right that I pay back into a sport that has given me such joy in my lifetime.
I also run a Championship Show – ‘BAGSD Oxhey’ – and I appreciate all the help that fellow club members and the competitors give on our show day to get it all on the road. There’s no “Dog Show Fairy”, we all have to contribute to keep our sport viable and progressing.

Having been a spectator at the Inter Regionals, then a very eager member of the South Eastern Team, competing with my lovely ‘Della’ in 2011 and again in 2016, to finally becoming the Team Manager for the South East and East Anglia in 2017, I can safely say I have seen the competition from almost every angle. Now, I get the huge privilege of judging the event - and what an honour and a huge responsibility it is!!!

I have the most amazing group of fabulous people in my Ring Party, all of whom are connected with me through the Inter-Regional Experience in one way or another. They have ALL worked their dogs in the Main Ring, Hall 5 and they all know exactly how the Team Competitors will be feeling on the day.
My theme is one of colour and joy – “Over the Rainbow” – Where all your dreams can come true. I hope everyone competing and watching will enjoy my tests and have a wonderful day. I certainly intend to! I have planned everything to make the day enjoyable and fun for the brave competitors and their lovely dogs, with no tricks or gimmicks to catch anyone out, whilst still being testing at just the right level. I really hope I have achieved this dream of mine! Good Luck to all Competitors and Teams – have an absolute ball!
I would like to thank the Royal Kennel Club and the Crufts Show Organisers for inviting me to take on this role. Thanks too to Kate McCartney and Bev Smith, who have been just brilliant in helping me to organise and prepare for this moment. Thanks too to my friends who supported me and told me to go for it, when I was feeling wobbly about accepting the invitation – boy, am I glad I did! So far it’s been a massive responsibility, loads of work and enormous fun!!! See you in the Big Green Ring and let’s do this!!!

(KCGCDS Special Pre Beginner Stakes)

I feel so honoured to be invited to judge the Royal Kennel Club Special Pre-Beginner Stakes final in 2026. My heartfelt thanks to Heidi & everyone at the RKC.

I've been around the Good Citizen ring at Crufts every year & most recently with Ramsey Dog Club as part of their Gold display team. The atmosphere is always so positive and helpful with that extra buzz you can only get from Crufts!

Of course as well as the final on Saturday, we have the YKC final on Sunday & it's always a pleasure watching young handlers get involved & watching them grow with their dogs.

I started training dogs 33 years ago at the tender age of 17! Gosh was it really that long ago? I can even remember entering a ykc competition but as it was only up to 18 in those days, I did only enter the one.

I have personally owned & trained a number of different dog breeds over the years, from a Chihuahua to a German Shepherd, including a lot of rescues. At the moment, I have Collies & Goldies.

I have trained 2 Obedience Champions & have been part of the Northern Obedience team in various classes 5 times so understand the enjoyment & pride that comes with working at Crufts. Also the fact there's no way of practicing for such a unique environment. The one piece of advice I can give everyone is that it's a case of trying your best, being proud that you're there but remember to ALWAYS have fun!

I will be ably assisted by my team:

Ring Steward: My husband Graham who is very experienced & has stewarded all levels up to ticket. Always with a cheerfull vibe so I know he'll put you all at ease.

Scribe: Miss Voirrey Horne. Voirrey is highly experienced in Good Citizen & Competitive Obedience. Having not only been in display teams a number of times but also as a member of the Northern Ireland inter-regionals team. Perfect to be at my side as I judge you all.

Ring Manager: Last but not least, we have Mrs Jean Young who will be at the ringside to organise you all & answer any questions you may have. Jean is very experienced with Good Citizen & someone who I consider to be the best display team manager for a numer of years. Again, her positive vibe & knowledge makes her perfect for this role. She'll know how you are all feeling & will be there to help as much as possible.

And with that, all that's left is for me to wish you all the very best of luck!

(YKC Obedience)

My journey in obedience began when I was very young, and like many juniors, it all started by tagging along to dog training with my parents. My mum, Sandra McIntosh, and dad, Jim McIntosh, founded Knightswood Dog Training Club in Glasgow in 1970, and from around the age of eight I was there every week, watching, learning, and desperately wishing for a dog of my own. My first opportunity came with my mum’s Sheltie, Brandy. He wasn’t the easiest dog — especially when it came to retrieving — but he taught me so much. I was allowed to train him on the condition that I practised during the week and listened carefully to everything I was taught at the club. That experience shaped my love for obedience and showed me how rewarding perseverance and teamwork can be.

Before long, I was competing with Brandy and taking part in junior classes. Although retrieving was still a challenge, we competed for several years and I was fortunate to win a number of Best Junior Handler awards. Training and competing with Brandy is something I still look back on very fondly.

As a teenager, I went on to train my own Border Collie, winning out of Beginners and competing through the Kennel Club Junior Organisation. I qualified for Crufts in 1985, and I still remember how exciting — and nerve-racking — it felt. One moment that really stands out is the sendaway, marked by black tape in a cross on the floor, and how thrilled I was when my dog completed it successfully. Those early junior experiences are memories that have stayed with me ever since.

Alongside obedience, I began my nurse training at the age of 17½ and qualified as a Psychiatric Nurse in 1990. I am still working in this field today as a Community Psychiatric Nurse Team Leader. Shortly after qualifying, I moved back home and got another Border Collie from the late Angie Jude’s breeding. With Leah (Pied Lady), I achieved Obedience Champion status and competed in the Championship at Crufts in 1995, 1996 and 1997.

Judging has also become an important part of my obedience journey. I judge regularly and in 2009 qualified to judge Obedience Championship Class C (Ticket). However, being invited to judge the Young Kennel Club Obedience at Crufts is especially meaningful to me, as this is where my own Crufts journey began as a junior competitor.

I have spent a great deal of time designing my YKC courses to take account of the different age groups within each class, ensuring they are fair, achievable, and enjoyable. My team and I aim to support and guide each junior through their round, helping them feel relaxed and confident so they can enjoy every moment. I hope this experience helps create special memories for the juniors — just as my own YKC journey did for me all those years ago.
