JUDGES AT CRUFTS 2023

Judge - Sarah Delany

(Dog & Bitch Championships)

I feel really honoured to be invited to judge the Obedience Championships at Crufts so thank you to the Kennel Club for the invitation to judge this once in a lifetime appointment. I have been judging obedience classes since 1994 and started judging Championship classes in 2007. It is always a privilege to judge a Ticket class and see the very best obedience partnerships work so to judge the winning teams from 2024 at Crufts is a dream come true. In 2022, I also had the privilege of judging the Obreedience final at Crufts and really enjoyed my first experience of judging on the green carpet.

When I was born, my parents had 13 dogs as my Mum bred and showed Dachshunds as well as having a Great Dane. My Dad also worked one of Wilf Chadwick’s GSDs in Obedience and Working Trials even winning an Obedience Ticket at one point (though Wilf worked the dog at Crufts). As a baby I spent a lot of time at various dog shows. I even have a framed picture of me as a baby sitting next to Muriel Pearce’s famous multiple Crufts Obedience Championships winner Megan of Monksfield with a trophy she had just won between us with me gazing at her in awe.

However I didn’t really get into training dogs until my late twenties when I started in Agility with my Groenendael and my Mum’s GSD, Border Collie and Toy poodle. I competed at both Crufts and Olympia in agility before falling in love with obedience and starting to concentrate on that with my Groenendaels. I have qualified 5 different dogs for Ticket and competed 11 times at Crufts with my Groenendaels, 7 times in the Obedience Championships with OB CH Vanistica Gideons Moon (3rd in 1995) and Ob Ch Vanistica French Eclipse (6th in 2007). I have also been lucky enough to compete 3 times in the Inter Regional Team Obedience with my 2 Champions on their way to Ticket and with a third Groenendael Vanistica Gullivers Travels. I also had the fantastic experience of competing in the Crufts World Cup competition as part of the winning England World Cup team in 2009 with Ob Ch Vanistica French Eclipse.

Currently I have two Border Collies, Rogan (aged 12 and now retired from competing but was working and got places as high as 3rd in Ticket) and Niles (aged 3 and working A with one win). I also have a little Poodle cross Arlo (aged 5, the cleverest dog I have ever had who learns so quickly and can do the most amazing tricks and set exercises but only chooses to do heelwork when it suits him lol)

For the last 8 years I have also been one of the Assistant Managers for the South East and East Anglia Inter Regional team with the excitement of the team winning on 3 occasions.

My parents, Barbara and Dick Delany, have been my biggest inspiration in my training throughout the years. They ran one of the best pet dog training and competitive obedience clubs called Collar and Lead in Farnborough in Hampshire for many years and that was where I learnt so much about training dogs, training people with their dogs and did all my obedience training with my own dogs. I owe so much to them including my love of dogs, training and competing so my themes on the 2 days honour them with one of my amazing Mum’s other passions being represented on Bitch day and one of my dearly departed Dad’s being represented on Dog day.

I cannot thank my team enough for all their time, effort and personal expense they have freely given to support me in carrying out this appointment. All Crufts plans were put on hold last summer when I got a shock diagnosis of very early onset breast cancer. I was lucky that it was found so early that a small operation gave me the all clear and no further treatment was required. This left the Crufts planning well behind schedule and I cannot thank my team enough for taking on various roles behind the scenes to get us up to speed in such a short time before Christmas. Outside of the team, I would also like to thank Alison Carey for making the wonderful retrieve articles, Val Dickeson for making the scent cloths (with the theme of the day in the corner of each one), Peter Lubbi for giving me the Silver tray and the back marker sendaway bases for us to rebrand and Karen Dunkason for taking the amazing picture of me and my dogs.

Finally I would like to wish all the competitors a wonderful day. The dedication and expertise required to win a Ticket and qualify means you are all stars already. Enjoy your special day as a celebration of your achievements.

(Inter Regionals - Obedience)

I can't really believe I am writing this introduction following the very surprising invitation to judge the Inter Regional Obedience competition at Crufts 2025. Many thanks for the kind invitation from the Kennel Club. I am honoured to have the opportunity for this once in a lifetime experience. Having previously been part of the team competing in 1995 with my Goldie cross Bailey in class A and again in 2005 with my Collie Brew in class C, I never dreamed I would ever be judging it.

I have always had dogs in my life and as a child the family pet was a Scottish Terrier, followed later by a silver-coloured Miniature Poodle. I spent many happy years teaching her lots of games and tricks.

In 1982 Derek my husband & I acquired a rescue GSD called Ben, which is where my journey into the world of dog training and shows began. Ben was reactive with dogs and wary of strangers, so we trundled along to the local club Wirral Alsatian Training Club, which I have belonged to for 42 years. After a steep learning curve, we eventually gained enough control and knowledge and entered an indoor Obedience Show in Halewood, Liverpool and gained a 4th in our class. It couldn't have been a worse place to take a dog with such unpredictable behaviour, but the bug had truly bitten after that success and serious training started. Ben won out of Beginners and Novice along with also competing in Agility in the late 80’s. I have owned 5 GSD's but unfortunately several have had health problems. My passion for Collies started when Bailey my red and white Cross came into my life. I have been privileged to own many super dogs over the years. I first qualified to work in ticket with Becky who then produced my beautiful Brew sired by Jack of Clubs. Brew worked Ticket but his problems with confidence in S/A were always present. I was looking for similar breeding and was lucky enough to get Bree. She was so similar in nature and together we had lots of success topped with a 3rd place in ticket. Sadly, injury and Covid cut her career short, but she still enjoys life at nearly 15.

Presently I have 5 dogs and am currently working B with Squiffy and A with my youngest Brec.

I have also competed in Agility since 2018 and managed to get to Grade 3 with Brodie and competed in Rally with 2 of my dogs reaching Grade 5 with Balla.

I started judging in 1990 and have judged at all levels over the 34 years, with my 1st Ticket appointment in 2009.

Throughout my time in WATS, I have always tried to put something back by instructing for many years, as well as serving on the Committee, currently I am the Treasurer. I have also helped run our annual Obedience weekend shows for many years.

My sincere thanks must go to my brilliant ring party team who all come with their own skills and knowledge to support me. Thanks for all the time travelling to the venues for practice sessions and putting up with all my little adjustments here and there. Your knowledge and company have been a real support. Thanks also to Newton Heath for allowing me to use their super grounds for a few of the sessions. Thanks also to all handlers and dogs who have worked and tested the rounds out for me.

Good luck to all the teams, I hope you all have a super memorable day representing your Regions and showing your lovely dogs.

Judge - Francis Herron

(KCGCDS Special Pre Beginner Stakes)

Firstly, I would like to thank the Kennel Club, Crufts Committee and all at The Good Citizen Dog Scheme for the invitation to judge at this years event. It is an honour and privilege to receive any judging invitation, but I cannot describe how this invitation made me feel. I have had a great time preparing for this year’s competition and I must thank my ring party for agreeing to join me at Crufts 2025. I will have my wife Jean Herron by my side scribing for me over the 2 days and we well be joined by Jean Young and Viorrey Horne who will have important roles over the course of the 2-days stewarding, looking after the collecting ring, and taking the score sheets to the desk.

I have been involved with competitive obedience for over 40 years, during this time I have judged all classes from Pre-Beginners to Championship C, I have also had the honour of judging the Northern Semi Final of the Special Pre-Beginners Obedience Stakes and YKC finals at Crufts 2023.

I have been involved with the Good Citizen Dog Scheme since 2009 when our club started running puppy foundation courses and bronze courses. I have successfully passed my examiners qualifications for both Bronze and Silver and this has resulted in me having the privilege of conducting exams all over Scotland for various clubs/societies. I currently hold the position of Obedience Co-Ordinator for The Scottish Kennel Club this involves organising and running their Championship show and assisting with the annual YKC Scottish camp. I also have my own training club (Community Dog Training) where along with my wife we train pet owners participating in the Good Citizen Dog Scheme as well as handlers/dogs competing at obedience shows at all levels Introductory to Championship.

We currently have 5 dogs at home, 3 have retired and I currently work our 2 border collies Tink and Ziva. Tink is working class B/C and her daughter Ziva is just starting her obedience adventure in Novice.

So finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the competitors the best of luck, I hope you all enjoy your time in the ring and please remember you always take the best dog home at the end of the day.

(YKC Obedience)

I feel very honoured to have been asked to judge YKC Obedience at Crufts 2025. Also being YKC 40th Anniversary.

I've been in Obedience for 20yrs and judging for about 10yrs.

I work other breeds, mainly Rottweilers over the 20yrs, As you can see from my picture. I got involved with the YKC with my niece to start with, then carried on doing some training days, which I had great fun with.

I just hope young handlers have fun and enjoy there day. Good Luck all.

Judge - Jen Wyatt

(Obreedience)

What an honour and a privilege to be invited by the Royal Kennel Club to judge the Obreedience final at Crufts 2025.
My life has always been filled with dogs. Growing up with three whippets sparked a lifelong love, but my real dog training journey began nearly 35 years ago with Solihull Dog Training Club (SDTC). What started as a personal interest quickly grew into a real passion, and before long, I was proud to become an instructor at the club.

As the SDTC Show Secretary for over a decade, I have long worked behind the scenes to help showcase the incredible partnerships between handlers and their dogs. Like so many others, obedience has taken me all over the country, where I’ve spent nearly 20 years judging, stewarding, and supporting at shows nationwide. It’s been a privilege to witness the dedication, hard work, and sheer joy of competition at every level.

In recent years, I have also had the pleasure of competing as an Obreedience team member with the Collie Flowers and, before that, Border Delights, alongside some fabulous dogs. Having judged the competition several times now, I have seen firsthand how this wonderful part of our sport has grown with each new year.

Alongside these commitments, I have been running the Solihull Bees Training Club for the past 10 years— where I received my official dubbed title of Queen Bee! It’s been amazing to watch both dogs and handlers grow in confidence, reach countless new milestones, and build lifelong connections.

Over the years, I’ve also had the privilege of leading the Gold Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme (GCDTS) team to Crufts more than 20 times as their Team Leader. Each visit to the famous green carpet has been filled with unforgettable moments, and it’s always incredible to see the talent and dedication of handlers and their dogs, whether in the main arena or the Good Citizen ring. I’ve also had the opportunity to help shape the next generation of trainers in my role as an examiner for new and prospective GCDTS assessors.

Beyond obedience, I’ve always been involved in the dog world in one way or another. As a former member of Hatchford Brook Flyball teams, I loved the thrill of competition, and on several occasions, our fantastic dogs even took us all the way to the Crufts main arena! I also run a grooming business alongside my training work, welcoming dogs of all breeds through the doors.

Being part of this incredible community has been one of the greatest joys of my life, and I’m beyond excited to celebrate the talent, enthusiasm, and hard work of all the Obreedience finalists. Good luck to all the teams—have a fantastic time, and I can’t wait to see you all strut your stuff!

A huge thank you to my wonderful friends, my ring party, who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make my time as a judge at Crufts so special. I adore you all and am so grateful for your support. Without you, this simply wouldn’t have happened.

Finally, as some of you may know, I was originally set to judge in 2026, but following the sad passing of Rita Goodfellow, the honour was passed to me. I have no doubt that Rita is watching over us all with a smile.
