Just back from Ditton Championship Show. What a marvellously run show this is. Maureen Shelly and the Ditton members
are to be complimented. I often wonder if competitors realise - I appreciate all the time effort and hard work it takes in putting a show together! How nice to see Ditton put up a separate ring near the Secretary's tent for prizes to be awarded . An idea suggested by June Watson and what a good one.

This year at Ditton was a particularly special occasion for one judge, Len Pearce. Len is President of Ditton Oub and chose to judge his last ticket here. As most of you know Len has judged tickets for many years, and Ditton and the obedience folks, as a mark of their respect and appreciation organised a presentation to commorate the occasion. Many many thanks from us all Len for awarding tickets to so many and giving even more of us the opportunity of trying to gain tickets. Unfortunately both Open C Dog stays were timed at the same time as the presentation to Len, so the C handlers missed the celebrations. In the future though we all look forward to working our up and coming dogs in the lower classes under you Len. What I thought was a particu-larly nice gesture from Len was that he personally presented a superb silver tray aptly inscribed to his C winner - Tony Romans, OB CH THYMES SON. To his placed teams a commorative plaque each. A fitting end to a super day.

Last month I talked about Deportment and footwork. To my mind this is where the handler will need enormous self discipline and self control. One of the best exercises to give the handler the confidence that the dog will stay on their leg in heel-work is the closing in exercise. Generally speaking this exercise may be taught ONCE the dog is HAPPY, ATTENTIVE, and bouncing about in the heelwork. It is the basis of the CONTROL and CORRECT position in Heelwork. If taught too easily it will inhibit a young dog. Ideally it should be taught before turns on the sport and on the move, but after lots of the PLAY training heelwork. Sit your dog by your side. Tell him to wait and take a large step to your right. Make sure you are holding your lead in your RIGHT hand. With the command close, taking you RIGHT leg back to balance you, and keeping your LEFf leg STILL, guide the dog up to your left side with your left hand on the lead, as you close your right leg to left leg, sit and PRAISE the dog. After a while your dog should be able to come to heel from the side and be in the correct position - IF you have applied your AIDS correctly. Once this exercise is perfected from the halt then it may be applied on the move during heelwork. It will reinforce to the dog where he should be in heelwork in relation to his handler. Then by simply using the command CLOSE in heelwork the handler may concentrate on themself. The exercise also teaches the dog to sit in heelwork in the correct position.

The other key to good deportment is of course TIMING, for instance its no good turning and THEN telling your dog what you want from him, you must tell him first with the APPROPRIATE AIDS fractionally BEFORE you turn, then your dog will understand you. Turns should also be executed at the SAME speed as the pace, you are working. If you are in nor-mal pace, it's no good at all if when you about tum you change your speed and whizz round faster, and once out of the tum change back to normal pace, you are not then being smooth and even on your turns and you will also create problems for your dog. He will either hang back or race you round according to the type of dog. It is also important to go into and come out of a tum on the same line ie, don't walk into or away from your dog, either before or after the tum, and oh yes - don't step back or wheel on the turns or wait, on them. These points apply to all paces. Gosh isn't it a lot to remember? Occasionally with a lot of hard work you will nearly be perfect in the ring. More often then not though I've found I make deportment mistakes in the ring. The art though is not to make as many mistakes as your opponents, and not to WORRY about the ones you do make in the ring. Just try harder next time.

Perhaps now one may begin to understand WHY it's so IMPORTANT to take your time building up your dogs' CONFIDENCE AND ATTENTION in the early days with PLAY training, BEFORE you attempt footwork and deportment - not to mention handler concentration. But that's another story.

Well here we are in the middle of the season and what a scorcher! I've opted out this weekend - it's far too hot for man and beast!

Tickets have been won by the dedicated and lucky, and lost by the unlucky. Sometimes it seems as if the elusive Ticket will never come your way, when for others it appears effortless and everything falls into place. The ease with which some top handlers collect Tickets - whereas others really struggle. The thrill of competing though!

At the beginning of July off we went to Nottingham Championship Show with out trailer tent. It poured all night long, but was dry on the day. So off we raced to Ruislip Championship Show for the next day. They were all there when we arrived, tents, caravans etc. Had a super evening with Sue Tewkesbury, drinking and reminiscing of the old days at Cheltenham Club. Isn't it odd, one knows when the day is going to be great! Ricky worked early in Ticket and held onto a place - so I was well pleased. What a disaster for Pat Evans in the Bitch class though. Both her Ticket bitches lying first and second and BOTH failed scent.

BUT what happens at Newark and Nottingham the following weekend? Pat wins OPEN and THEN the next day at Winchester wins her first ever Ticket with Montey Magie. What a moment eh! Marvellous, and the days afterwards, ... and didn't the Bristol crowd give Pat a super party on Thursday. Still on cloud nine eh Pat!- great!

So YOU still struggling Ticket holders out there, KEEP GOING, success is just around the corner. You know what it's like. One minute you're down and the next, well you're a WINNER, and it's absolutely GREAT.

Better return to dog training eh! One of the most important exercises is the Novice recall. This month I shall explain this exercise in greater detail as a following on from last month's article. A puppy will readily come if you use an exciting voice. Perry was a super dog, fast yet accurate. I usually do really short recalls to start, running backwards and calling the dog after A FEW paces. As soon as the dog reaches me I throw his toy behind me and make him race on for it. The next time I increase the distance away from the dog, just a little. I continue to do this, each time, gradually increasing the distance between the dog and myself, before I call in. At no time do I make the dog present, this will only inhibit and slow him down. What I'm after is speed and enthusiasm at this stage. Teaching recall in this manner, encourages the dog to come to you in a fast and happy manner. It also teaches speed from the moment the dog moves.

Once I have the speed on the recall THEN I teach the accuracy. Dog on lead in the heel posi-tion. Loose head. A few steps of heelwork then the handler goes into reverse, then zip on the lead, dogs name and come call aids handler moving backwards, taking the slack out of the lead and guiding dog into the present stopping when the dog is straight.

Don't forget to keep your hands centre and STAND STRAIGHT and DON'T bend over your dog or sway your body about when you stop.

The next stage is simply to (on the lead) tell the dog to wait, go to the end of the lead and turn and face. Call the dog, with the aids (remaining still) and you should have an accurate recall. If you follow ALL these stages then the dog should remain fast and accurate. Later, angled presents may be taught.

Going back to being a WINNER - one of my pupils, Jane Pheby; has had a season of disappointments in B. Whereas all her class mates, were winning B's and C's.

Jane finally climbed the mountain and won her first B at Andover, judged by Wally Baker. It's the custom at our local club, Stonehouse, to celebrate members wins with chocolate cake and wine. (what a mixture)! Everyone gives out congratulation cards and equal importance is given to Beginner wins as to C wins.

Well, Brian, my husband wrote on Jane's card - "Look at Ronald Reagan:- he was in B movies for years! AND he made it to the top!"

Well, that's it for this month folks, next stop is Potters Bar Championship Show. I do hear that Derek Martin, my Ticket judge, is in hospital. Now come on Derek, any excuse not to judge us dog lot! Oh well - hope Derek is well on the road to recovery and anyway there is a good bar there!

The tricks Perry would get up to - only in the ring of course. In training, butter wouldn't melt in his mouth! A favourite of his was anticipation, particularly in sendaway. I'd tried all sorts to stop him. Of course, now I wouldn't allow this to develop. One day I was watching a video of Crufts, and one dog in the sendaway set up, marked the sendaway and then flicked his eyes up (not his head) waiting for the handlers command to go. That's the answer, I thought. So I taught Perry to look straight, and then look up at me before I sent him. He went as fast and as straight as you could wish for. Well, this worked like a dream - for a few shows. What does he do after a bit? Look straight, then looks up at me, away he goes on command and after a few yards, still running at full steam, he looks back - "Well is this what you wanted?" Of course he looses his direction never his speed!.

He was the past master at anticipating positions in distance control. Incredibly, he would always anticipate the correct position long enough, not varying the sequence of positions, not controlling myself or how I tried the commands, ie. Perry would read my eyes and body move-ment. I didn't really need to give the verbal commands, he was reading my body talk. The trouble was, I was not reading him. He was too quick and too clever for me.

Anticipation is usually caused through a) lack of respect from the dog, b) the dog not listening to the handler,
c) over excitement, d) repetition of exercise. So once you have motivated your dog, be calm and quiet in your handling and your commands. Teach your dog to LISTEN to you. Sometimes a LOUD voice, sometimes a QUIET voice. This will really help to teach the dog to concen-trate on you. Perry was particularly good at listening to the stewards commands, especially the ASSD positions. One year in Ticket at Lichfield, Perry anticipated every position on the move, he did three downs. Next day was Govan Ticket show in Scotland. "You're not going?" said my friends. "Oh yes I am" say I. "But he's antici-pating stewards commands" they said. "Never mind it will be alright, because they say 'now' differently in Scotland, it sounds like - noo" is my reply, Sure enough it fooled Perry and we ended up third in the ticket. But really what a crazy way to carry on. I let that dog play with me like that for seven years. I said there are some thick dogs, but boy, was I one hell of a thick handler then!

The more you work and compete with a dog the harder it· becomes to maintain the concentration of that animal and the correct response from the dog to command in the ring situation, eg. the dog that drops short in sendaway. In this instance, I'm thinking of the experienced 'C' dog who knows his job and anticipates the sendaway box and drops short - he has a preconceived idea. Ideally in training, you never drop the dog in a box - you run him through, but you DO have an instant drop on command. However, sooner or later, with certain types of dogs, they start dropping short. There are many ways to overcome this problem and perhaps the best guidelines to give is to change your tactics of training completely. In other words, instead of showing him what you want, DON'T, and then let him make the mistake, which he will if you do enough of them and then correct him. This worked beautifully with Kim.

Some dogs, when experienced, become bored with training. Really, the work has become easy for them by this stage and although they appear to be concentrating, they are not. They also start testing you, and it's at this point that you really start to learn to read your dog. To be one step ahead of him and control not only the dog, but the situation and yourself. This requires skill, self awareness and self discipline, and to me, is the real challenge of competing. It is not what you win or how much you win that matters, but what obstacles you meet in the process and how you overcome those obstacles that matter.

Perry qualified to work ticket at 2½ years, so I thought, here I am a TICKET HANDLER, isn't this great! Well I can tell you that Perry soon brought me down to size, and then the years of bitter disappointment began. We went to every Ticket Show and Open throughout the country every week for six years, and never in that time won a first prize! Why not? Lack of respect from the dog and no self discipline from the handler. At the time, of cou•se, I didn't realize why. I just kept slogging away, becoming more and more upset. It's very hard to see the light, especially when you travel on your own for hundreds of miles. You can imagine how I would feel, having blown it yet again and have a lonely drive back home from somewhere like Scotland. Oh yes, I learned how to lose.

One year at Littlebourne Ch Show, I well remember waiting with Perry to work Ticket by the ring, I was talking to Derek Martin who had that wonder-ful dog OB CH BOSS OF THORNY-
MOOR. All of a sudden, Perry dived at Boss. I was so furious that I picked him up and shook him! "Number 56" the steward called. Gosh that's me, no time for a warm up, and Perry just told off. Into the ring we went, and Perry worked a blinder. He was a dream. His eyes never left me; butter wouldn't melt in his mouth. We came out losing 1 point - the leader! Need-less to say that by the time scent came, I'd lost that authority over him and he managed to mess about and lose the Ticket.

Perry was extremely well trained and schooled, BUT, he was the BOSS, not me. I never disciplined him so con-sequently, he always took over when I wasn't in control. He knew he would just be cuddled, whatever he did. He was never put in his place. Why didn't I see that at Littlebourne that day. I'm a firm believer in PLAY training, so the dog WANTS to, and ENJOYS working for you. Always SHOW the dog exactly what you want from him and TEACH him carefully and methodically. He must, however, understand that you mean what you say. Apart from playing with a puppy, I teach him to go down on command. This can be taught in a fun way, playing tug of war with his toy and then when he's really pulling, simply let go, and say "down", gently pushing him down. This is so easy to teach at this stage and of course you will have a nice backward down from the stand, which will pay dividends later for DC. Once he's doing this as a game without the aids (ie, hands and voice), when he is just scampering around on his own indoors - say his name (to obtain his attention) and then the COMMAND (not request) to go down. If he's not sure, calmly and quietly walk over to him, repeat the commands and apply the aid and PRAISE him when he's correct. From here the dog will gradually go down on command without any help from the handler. Repeat the above process, showing him first, and then letting him loose and give him the command. If you have handled him with authority, will obey. If not, quietly go up, reprimand him, again show him what you want and then praise him for being correct. He will soon learn. The test of your authority will come when you place the dog in a testing

I usually put a pup with my older trained dogs for this This way, the pup will soon learn who the pack leader is - ME! Because I have this rapport with my dogs and their respect, they have only been happy to obey me. After all, we call our sport Competitive OBEDIENCE do we not?
Perry would never go down on command, especially in SA's - straight through the box until he "hit" a wall. Sometimes he would bring the box back with him. Well, everyone laughed at him and he loved that.

So teach your pup to go down on command, because he is then submitting to YOU. If he will go down in any situation, then YOU will be in CONTROL when you work him.

Part One

Someone once asked me "When teaching class or training your own dog, do you think it all out before-hand, or is it an instinct?" It was a question that made me realise I just do what comes naturally, and that question started me thinking.

Some twenty years ago I took my pet dog to the Local Dog Training Club - s·imply because when out walking her, she would not come back when called! Before long I was well and truly hooked on Dog Training. Little did I think that it would become a way of life and one day I would be the proud owner of an Obedience Champion.

Eventually I found myself at Charlie Wyats' famous Dog Training School in Littlebourne, Kent. Oh! the thrill of finally arriving at Littlebourne and driving past those quaint old houses and field upon field of fruit trees just bursting into blossom. Charlie's training hall, which he built himself, and the cinema seats that hugged the walls, the mirrors at strategic angles, so you could check your deportment - and oh!. - the absolute magnetism of Charlie himself. Well I sat in my cinema seat for a week and listened spellbound to the MASTER. Suddenly it all made sense - this so simple, yet logical, method of Dog Training, all written down in my sixpenny Woolworth's exercise book - jokes and all - not forgetting Charlie's famous black bag. He said, "you must be prepared when you go to a show - you will need - Dumbell, knotted rag, etc." and Charlie produced from his cupboard what must have been the original Doctor's Black Bag. Having blown all the layers of dust off it, he finally prized it open to reveal a mouldy sandwich and a packet of woodbines. We all fell about - what a laugh - obviously well used!

The walls of the hall were full of rosettes, photographs of dogs and the hall of fame. All those trained at Littlebourne who won C.C.s gave Charlie their C.C. Certificates, and the dog's name plaque, from Crufts to display. There were some great dogs and handlers from that school.

I remember staying with Judith Gregory (now better known as the breeder of the TONKORY B.C.s) in a minute two berth caravan. We prac-tised our deportment inside the caravan in the evenings - absolutely besotted with Dog Training to the point of eating, thinking and talking Dog Obedience. We certainly didn't have time to sleep! It was a week never to be forgotten and Littlebourne always drew me back like a bear to the honeypot. So armed with Charlie's method, his inspiration and my inter-pretation of his method, I left Little-bourne and headed out into my competitive career.
First stop from Charlie's was Poole Championship Show and guess what? Yes - it rained all day. Poole Show was famous for two things, a super show and the ability to nearly always pro-duce rain. But rain or shine I didn't care, as my Perry (Shepdine Perry) won his first novice and I was on cloud nine!

So to return to my first sentence. A good sound schooling in BASICS is absolutely essential before any serious competition may be attempted. Once the method of teaching your dog has been understood and mastered, then I found the instinctive training became dominent. Rather like learning to drive a car, all fingers and thumbs, no co-ordination etc. until, one day you drive automatically and naturally react to •a driving situation and afterwards realise what you did. The times this occured to me and always I handled and reacted with my dogfollowing my intuition and produced the desired results. So let us go back and re-trace those early steps of learning to train my dog.

Following the cancellation of our July show we have finally been in a position to complete the balance sheet and submit figures to the Royal Kennel club. This also now means we can invite those who entered to apply for a refund of 77% of entry fees paid.

If you do not wish to receive a refund then you need take no further action and your 77% of entry fees paid will be donated to The Kennel Club Charity Trust, whose aim is to make a real difference to the health of dogs and dog welfare, no matter what their breed or background. Following the cancellation of our Championship Obedience show and Obreedience heat we are currently working towards a figure and process to allow competitors to apply for a refund of entry fees. At this stage we still have a couple of invoices to agree but it is likely that the refund would be at least two thirds of the amount paid in entry fees. Competitors will have a choice of either claiming a refund, by providing bank details within a specific timeframe, or allowing their contribution to be donated to Charity. The committee of Winchester City DTC has agreed any surplus monies will be donated to The Kennel Club Charitable Trust, whose aim is to make a real difference to the health of dogs and dog welfare, no matter what their breed or background. Unfortunately, due to holiday commitments, it is unlikely we will have a final figure for one of the invoices until August. At that stage we will confirm the exact pence in £ refund that entries will receive.
We can also advise that we are trying to see if we can reschedule the “Crufts Qualifier” classes for towards the end of October. This would be the two Championship (ticket) classes, Good Citizen Special Pre-Beginner and Obreedience Heat. This is subject to RKC approval and agreement on a potential venue. This would be treated as a new show for which competitors would need to enter, i.e. entries will not be rolled over. .Again, we will advise further in due course.
Please look out for further announcements during August.

It is with great regret that we advise Coventry DTC Championship Shows scheduled for Friday 10th and Saturday 11th July 2026 are to be cancelled.
This decision has not been taken lightly, with projected temperatures as below for the venue.

The UK's Health Security Agency have issued an Amber heat-health alert for the Midlands and South of England. They are valid from 09:00 on Wednesday 8th July until 21:00 on Sunday 12th July.

Cancellation of Winchester City DTC Championship Show – Sunday 12th July 2026:
We regret to advise that Winchester City DTC Championship show scheduled for Sunday 12th July has been cancelled. This follows the Amber heat-health alerts that have been issued from the UK's Health Security Agency, for the South of England. They are valid from 09:00 on Wednesday 8th July until 21:00 on Sunday 12th July.
Prior to the announcement, we had considered an earlier time to commence judging but given the warning and in the interest of dogs, competitors officials and helpers we felt we were left with little choice but to cancel. Any refunds will be dealt with in accordance with Rule 9 under the Rules and Regulations listed within the schedule for the show.

Once again, this year C.D.T.A. Is supporting a local Charity - Shad’s Legacy, who rescue large breed dogs from the pound who are due to be p.t.s. The Charity struggles most of the year and once again, we are asking for your help in cutting their costs by bringing an item from the list below - the Rescue would be so appreciative.

* Unwanted collars & leads for large breed dogs

I’ve created this new format Forum that is accessible from both the ObedienceUK menu (Member Forum), and the Obedience Plaza links page (Forum).

The new Forum is standalone but accessible using your ObedienceUK / Obedience Plaza login details (username and password).

My reason for creating the standalone forum is that there will be no forum on the Obedience Plaza website so that when eventually the ObedienceUK website is ‘Closed’ then non-facebook people will still have a forum.

The new forum has a few ‘extra’ facilities than the old Members Forum. Notable:

(i) There is no upper limit on the number of threads (although I may archive really old posts in the future)
(ii) There is the ability to put uploaded attachments against a thread (typically jpg, doc and pdf but others are allowed). However I’m restricting file sizes to 2MB (and only one attachment per thread).
(iii) I’ve included a basic ‘LIKE’ click against each thread topic and each reply. (Although I haven’t, as yet, put a list of who liked it.)

I hope you will find the new forum usable (for at least the non-facebook people).

Some of you may be aware (but the majority not), that there is a new Obedience website in town!

It is called the Obedience Plaza (and can be found at https://ObediencePlaza.co.uk).

So carried over from ObedienceUK it has shared the full database to continue use of:

- Usernames and passwords (you just have to login the first time to set up your cookie for the new site - using the same username and password)
- Shows and Schedules (immediately available in both sites)
- Show Reports (immediately available in both sites)
- Shared details of Courses, and Adverts.

The new site (https://ObediencePlaza.co.uk) is the brainwave of Mike Aubury who has used his knowledge of AI web Development to produce this vision of the future. It combines all that ObedienceUK.net has combined with extra functionality.

For normal users the new functionality provides:

+++ Maps - a big NEW part of the information are maps from which you can see Shows or Training Clubs within a given radius from your home. (Entering your home Post Code in your Profile in the new site is all you need to do to make use of this.)

+++ If you judge, there will be a Dashboard which gives you access to the Show Reports you have written, and allows you to make amendments to your report (and even remove it).

+++ There is a new section on Show Results (Class scores and positions) from Shows that are engaged in the process (the Class scores will be printable).
Users will be able to read Spotlight reports (some created by show secretaries).

+++ The News facility is comprehensive and we may give responsible individuals moderation access to insert items of News themselves (e.g. members of the OLC).

+++ The usual Ticket and Crufts pages in a slightly updated form.

+++ It will be great to hear from you about any Training Club or Groups that we can add to the TRAINING page (existing ones we need your Post Code so that they appear on the Training Map).

+++ We are excited in trialling a Volunteering section that may be of use to contribute in the search for help (judges / stewards). The secretaries will be able to make a search on availability. Basically in each users profile they can specify:
---------Which classes they are prepared to judge
---------Which classes they are prepared to steward
---------How far they are prepared to travel
---------Maximum number of appointments they will take
---------Number of appointments they have accepted so far

++++ On the day of a show a Live Board containing announcements from the Secretary and Judges could be available. (Useful for a ‘call to work’, or ‘scent down’, or ‘presentation in 10 minutes’ type of announcement.) Users can ‘subscribe’ to the service and get notifications on the web site. NOTE - we do not send phone notifications.

For show secretaries the functionality provides:

++++ From their Dashboard, Show Secretaries are given access to the Show details for their own Shows

It allows them to make amendments to the details.

It allows them to add the Schedules and Entry Forms (and many more types of document including Running Orders) themselves. Preferably in pdf format so everyone can read it. Les Perry will continue to do this for those that struggle with computers.

A secretary can set up class details (or import them from a Running Order / Class List using AI to recognise the contents of the list) including Judge assignment.

On the day of the show (or after) Judges (or Show Secretaries) will be able to apply scores to the Classes at their Show. (Scores applied to the Classes can be applied at varying levels e.g. just those in the line-up or all competitors, and at exercise or total level) This is very mobile friendly, and flexible.

On the day of the show there’s the facility to have a Live Board which individuals can subscribe to. Judges and Secretaries could post their announcements.

There’s a new Spotlight facility open to Show Secretaries to express their comments pre or post Show.

WE ARE NOT TURNING OFF OBEDIENCEUK. We explained above that both sites are using the same database, so both CAN co-exist. Obviously we need user feedback which we will consider before the final decision to migrate completely.

Just to point out that we will not carry forward a Member Forum into the new website. For those that don’t use facebook I’ve included a link to the ObedienceUK Microsoft Teams Community website in the LINKS page of the new site. Again any comments about use of Microsoft Teams will be considered.

Loughborough Show, there maybe a road closure when you come to the show on the junction of Broomleys Road and Meadow Lane you cannot get onto Meadow Lane where the roadworks are. When you come to the junction to bear left for Meadow Lane fork Right to Greenhill Road, follow along past Windsor Close then Linford Crescent on the left and then take next left Blackwood follow that to the crossroads and go straight across and the venue is on the left.

Another year come and gone, and today (Friday) the show stuff has finally been put to bed for another year.

As usual, a successful dog show cannot function without its volunteers and so there are a number of thank you’s to offer:

My son and future daughter in law Anthony & Emma for there help throughout the recent months with all the admin and preparation and their help during the day.

Julie, Neil & Rosie who have no association with the club, merely family friends, who travel up from Northampton year in year out to help set up the day before and then numerous roles during the show, such as car parking, refreshments, decoys and packing up.

The “Thursday Nighters” who attend the club training but hold no role on the committee who give up their day to assist especially Lorinda and Elaine for their photos.

One of the biggest thanks to the judges and stewards, who without them, the show cannot go ahead. It is becoming increasingly harder to get these, and like other show secretaries is a massive frustration. On that note, I’m still short for a few judges next year, Monday 3rd May 2027. This year we were lucky enough to put on a 3rd C class and find a spare judge but next year we are seriously considering capping the classes to 2 parts per class so any volunteers to judge will be greatly appreciated.

I’m sure there are others to thank but as you can imagine things can be forgotten in the mist of everything so thanks to you and I’m sure that all the competitors will give the above thanks as without them the show cannot go ahead so thank you.

I would like to add a thanks to everyone who attended and hope you had a good time. Parking was a dream this year, although the weather helps, and no issues were raised during the show.

We would like to apologise for the catering issue; we had a catering van booked and at approx. 630 received a text to say they had a puncture and were awaiting the RAC and would try and get to the show ASAP, unfortunately they stopped communicating with us and despite numerous efforts to get an update received nothing. Had we have known early enough we could have tried liaising with the clubhouse to try and put something on, so again we are very sorry.

Finally, we have a number of lost property that were handed to us from rugby show as well as left at our show. This will all be at Loughborough show next weekend.

We also have a rosette left over for 6th Place in Wendy Birch’s class number 352. This will also be at Loughborough.

The Royal Kennel Club is inviting applications from individuals interested in becoming Obedience Accredited Trainers for the Judges’ Training Programme. Applications close on Friday 3rd April 2026.

About the Judges’ Training Programme

This programme has been developed over time to align with the requirements already in place for all judges across canine activities. It reflects The Royal Kennel Club’s commitment to:

Maintaining and improving the standard of judges and judging at official Royal Kennel Club licensed events.
Ensuring the quality of dogs and the value of awards they receive at these events.
Accredited Trainers are appointed for each discipline to deliver seminars and conduct assessments and offer guidance and support to judges. All trainers are established experienced judges, having attended training and assessment sessions to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and competence in delivering the seminar syllabus. Trainers are appointed with a good geographical spread to minimise travel distances for seminar attendees.

Role of Obedience Accredited Trainers

Successful applicants will:

Deliver seminars and assessments in line with the programme syllabus.
Participate in at least 2 shadowing sessions with experienced Accredited Trainers before presenting seminars independently.
Be an active member of the obedience accredited trainers group to assess, review and amend the provision of judges training to ensure it remains fit for purpose to promote and support new and experienced judges to retain their competence
Candidate Criteria

We are looking to recruit both existing CC qualified judges and those with a wide range of judging experience up to and including Class B:

Proven presentation, facilitation and teaching skills are essential (preferably to have own laptop / tablet and a knowledge of how to use PowerPoint).
A minimum of 8 years judging experience and 30 judging appointments, either as a qualified/working towards CC judge, or extensive experience across all classes up to class B.
Show management experience, so as to demonstrate knowledge of the needs of societies when organising competitions.
Have attended and passed the exam for the Obedience Regulations and Judging Procedure seminar and attended the Test Design and Practice of Judging Seminar
A willingness to travel to deliver seminars.
Be required undertake at least 2 shadowing sessions with experienced Accredited Trainers before gaining accreditation to present seminars independently.
CC judges will be accredited to deliver all levels of seminar and undertake judges observations as required.
Judges up to Class B will be accredited to deliver new judges seminars and support judges progression up to class B.

For those who have already completed it, thank you and we still have your responses***

One of the elements of our strategic plan is to review the entry level classes. There seems to be mixed feedback about the Introductory class, so we wanted to learn more about your experiences with this class to see if any changes are needed.

We want to hear from anyone who has had some involvement with the Introductory class in the past two years. There are questions for anyone who has competed in or is currently competing in Introductory, for those who have judged the class and for Show Organisers who have decided to schedule or not schedule the class.

We would be very grateful if you could please take a few moments to complete the survey so that we can better understand the current situation. The survey is anonymous and you can only complete one response per person.
