Is it possible to collapse the threads like on the old website
Bit of a bind to scroll down all threads to find the one you want
Thanks   (rafart) 08/01/2025 11:01

Personally I prefer the full format as in the old 'collapsed' format the first thing I did (EVERY time) was click the 'expand' button. Let's see what everyone else say.  (obedienceuk) 09/01/2025 09:01

Collapsed here too.  (DaveB) 10/01/2025 03:01

OK, I'll look at re-working it in the next few weeks.  (obedienceuk) 10/01/2025 04:01

New WINNERS Database  (obedienceuk) 20/01/2025 09:01

I've been asked to have a database of WINNERS on the site.

This would be a huge task to integrate within the site, but I have customised a freely available 'package' sourced from DaDaBIK and hosted on my own server.

It's accessible from the SHOW REPORTS menu as item 'WINNERS Database'.

The public access is using username 'info' and password 'info'.

What I intend is to supply Show Secretaries with their own usernames & password which will allow them to enter their show's winners.

Comments please.

Why would anyone ask for this. Don't think show secretary's would have time to add a report  (bayley) 23/01/2025 07:01

MOST COMMON PROBLEM  (obedienceuk) 05/01/2025 12:01

It appears that the most common problem is that the link in the email you receive to choose your password does not work.
When you request a link email by the Forgot link it generates a new email to you with a new link. Each time you request the link the old link becomes invalid for your email address.

So it’s important you are clicking the link in the latest email.

I suggest you wait a while then do the request once (only once) and wait for THAT email.

Plymouth DTC Shows  (breeze) 15/01/2025 12:01

On Behalf of the remaining club and Committee members of Plymouth DTC

I regret to announce that following the sad and sudden passing of Rita Goodfellow, the remaining committee and members of Plymouth DTC have made the difficult decision to cancel all future obedience shows. It has not been easy to do so, and the many offers of help were appreciated but it is not viable for a number of reasons.
The support given by everyone to help, judge and generally support the shows over the years has been tremendous but it is now time to call it a day.
If you had agreed to judge at any of the future shows please can you contact me to let me know. The Committee are in the process of getting all the clubs paperwork from Rita’s family and will be in contact with judges etc in due course.
Please also direct any questions to me at this time.
Sue Garner.

Thank you Les  (breeze) 16/01/2025 06:01

American date format  (CarolS) 08/01/2025 12:01

Love the look of the new site, however, not at all keen on using American date format (year, month day) think this may be quite confusing for some of our older members ... of which I am one!

OK, I'm using the 'American style' date because of sorting the columns. You may have realised that you can click the arrows at the top of the Closing Date column and the show list re-sorts into Closing Date sequence. The dates have to be in this format to allow this sort. If you really are adverse to this then click the link near the top of the page to go to the original format page which is in dd-mm-yy format.  (obedienceuk) 09/01/2025 09:01

Post Code now links to Google Maps  (obedienceuk) 09/01/2025 12:01

It's been suggested that, as we have the Post Code against the Show's, that we can link to Google Maps. So I've done this today. Click the Post Code and it should open Google Maps.

NEW WEBSITE FROM MONDAY 6TH JANUARY  (obedienceuk) 03/01/2025 12:01

OK, I'm going to switch OFF the old site on Monday. PLEASE get your passwords for the new site NOW via the FORGOT link on obedienceuk.name

From having a handful of messages in a week, it seems I've caused an 'avalache', so bear with me while I go through them.
There's a lot of similar questions, which include:

1. "How do I see the new website?" Go to obedienceuk.name (this will become obedienceuk.net on Monday)

2. "How do I login?" You can't log in until you have a new password. To chose a new password you need to click the FORGOT link and enter your email address. You will be emailed with a link to choose a new password. You use this new password with you username (NOT your email address) to login.

3. "My email address is being rejected." If you are sure you have entered your correct email address then it is not the one on the old (obedienceuk.net) website. In that case you need to email me with your new email address and I'll update the new site. obedienceuk@gmail.com

4. "Where is the FORGOT link?" On obedienceuk.name it says you are initially a GUEST. On the same line you will see the word 'Forgot?' ... click that.

5. "I didn't get the email to reset my password." So far people who say they haven't seen the email have come back to say it was in their spam folder. (There's no reason why the email was not sent if you matched your email address on the site.)

6. "I haven't received an email from you." This must be confusing, but I haven't sent out emails telling you what is happening. I just put instruction on here (FB) and the members form.

7. "Do I have to pay again for the new site?" No, all memberships are carried over to the new site, you just need a new password (by clicking the 'Forgot' link and following the instructions).

8. Please don't reply to the Forgot email as it does to an admin email address that I don't read.

9. When press FORGOT link you enter your email address and you get an email. If the link in the email fails then it is an out-of-date email, because you have requested an email multiple times and the link has been updated by later requests. So stop! Wait! Then request the link just once again. Then wait! If you can't find the latest email even in spam, contact Les Perry (who has a blind copy of all emails).  (obedienceuk) 05/01/2025 10:01

New format ObedienceUK website for review  (obedienceuk) 01/01/2025 12:01

I've been working on this new format for the main ObedienceUK website (replacement ObedienceUK.net), and it's finally ready for you to view it. The web address is currently ObedienceUK.name (to distinguish it from the live site ObedienceUK.net) and you are all initially GUESTS to the site. The site is probably 99% up-to-date with memberships transferred from this site, but you need to follow the FORGOT link to retrieve your password by entering your email address (if your email address on the original site is wrong then you'll need to contact me to correct it obedienceuk@gmail.com).

https://obedienceuk.name

For those having problems finding the FORGOT link, it's just under the main logo it says "Username: Guest" and it's in brackets on that line.  (obedienceuk) 01/01/2025 03:01

When you enter your email address it will send you an email containing a link where you can choose a password for the new site (you can use your old password if you like as they are unconnected).

If you fail to get an email, first check your spam folder, sometimes it goes there.

If you definitely don't receive it mail me, and I'll try to send another email (last resort please).   (obedienceuk) 01/01/2025 03:01

The new schedules page takes a bit of getting used to. The page is constantly re-organising itself. I don't know if you've noticed, but if you click the column headings (e.g Closing Date arrows) it re-sorts into closing date order (for which it requires the date in the format YYYY-MM-DD). Also if you search (say Coventry) it reduces the list to only those with the search key (Coventry) in it. I've put a link to the old format page there (which has dd/mm/yy dates) maybe that's easier for WATCHing.   (obedienceuk) 01/01/2025 03:01

For people viewing the new schedules page on a mobile, initial it only shows the show date and show name, but against each show you can see a blue button. If you click the blue button it changes to red, but more importantly it expands 'just that show' to show you all of its information.   (obedienceuk) 01/01/2025 03:01

Sad News – Bryan Oram
I am sad to report the passing of Bryan Oram. For many years Bryan, with his various dogs was a keen competitor at obedience shows and an active supporter of the sport.
Together with his wife Sylvia they were the stalwarts in the running of the Leicester Dog Training Club. Bryan was also the organiser of the very popular annual obedience show run by the club.
Bryan will be sadly missed by his many friends
We send our condolences to his wife Sylvia and family.
Rest in peace old friend.......
Roger Gunby, on behalf of his friends
The family of Bryan are trying to find a loving home for his remaining dog Mirk, a 10 year old Border Collie, whom Bryan worked in obedience until he retired from the sport. If anyone is interested in giving Mirk a loving home, please message me and I will put you in touch with his daughter.

Rita   (Patsy) 20/11/2024 07:11

I am sorry to inform everyone that today we lost a very special lady, Rita Goodfellow, Her son rang me this morning to say Rita passed away peacefully today. I am as shocked as you all are.

Rita was a very special person who gave so much to our sport. Will miss you   (Christhetoerag) 21/11/2024 01:11

I didn’t have the privilege of a long friendship with Rita, but on my first Pre-beginners competition at Sherborne, she went out of her way to give me 100% support. She showed great kindness, even when she herself was competing. I told her at the time I would always love her for it. And I always will. Bless you Rita, you will be missed by so many.
Vanessa Lill.  (Vanessa) 21/11/2024 04:11

Such sad and shocking news, Rita did so much for our sport and would go out of her way to help anyone. RIP Rita  (lizlyddiatt) 21/11/2024 05:11

Midland Team Try Outs Crufts 2025
Thank you all for your team applications and for supporting Team Purple. The try out day is to be held on Saturday 23rd November 2024, (this isn’t a competition but will enable us to see you and your dog work in a competitive environment) at:
Tomlinsons Canine Centre,
Upper Grange Farm,
Ratby Lane, Markfield. LE67 9RJ.
Directions: From M1 J.22. Take A50 towards Leicester. At 1st roundabout turn right towards Ratby. We are situated about ½ mile from the first roundabout on the right and just before a right hand bend.
Arrival Time: 9-30am for 10-00am start. (Please note that NOBODY, EXCEPT ORGANISERS, WILL BE ADMITTED BEFORE 9-30am, gates will be shut and queuing on road outside is dangerous . We also need time to set up)
We will be starting with novice. Followed by beginners.
There will be a full running order so please check when you arrive.
Spectators are welcome to bring their dogs but unfortunately they will not be allowed to train in the hall and please be mindful of people preparing their dog to work as space is limited.
Catering is available eg: Bacon, eggs, burgers, chips, cakes, tea and coffee .
We are very fortunate to secure this centrally located venue so please take note of the following:
NO DOGS OFF LEAD as this is a working kennels and kennel dogs are being exercised.
You may walk your dogs on lead around the grassed tracks around the paddocks. Beyond the paddock is a public footpath across fields which could be muddy.
Please take a towel to clean your dog off before bringing into the training hall.
If anyone has barking dogs please park behind the building to keep peace with the locals.
Please clean up after your dogs, there are plenty of waste bins available.
Although you are under no obligation to stay on after your work out, this is a team event and as such we would really appreciate that you stay on to support the rest of the applicants.
Looking forward to seeing you all on the big day, don’t forget to bring some pocket money to spend on the tombola which is going to be fabulous with loads of lovely prizes that people have generously donated. Above all, please enjoy the day.
Lou, Lyn and Mavis.

Training Rounds  (kyledon) 29/10/2024 07:10

I started in Obedience back in the early 80’s and won my first Beginners in July 1985 and progressed with my two dogs through Beginners, Novice and A and got a couple of places in B until the early 90’s when I changed job and could no longer compete.
In those days we would not have dreamed of doing training rounds, nor did we have dogs that had to be so precise with robotic heelwork as to not lose lots of points.
Over the years we have taken on a number of older rescue dogs and so Obedience was not really for us.
Coming back into the sport in 2022, I was appalled to see that the standard in the lower classes is so much lower than we were expected to perform back in the 80’s with less exercises in each class and with such a high number of training rounds in most classes.
Charlie Wyant used to say “you compete at the shows and train your dog at home”
Prior to being diagnosed with cancer in 2016 I was working Nov /A with a rescue from Battersea who had been running wild for some time up country and whowas carrying a lot of “baggage” from his past and I was also training a young collie puppy.
I really did struggle with the rescue dog in the ring as he had some major “trust” issues to overcome with strange people being around him. At club he was very good and very calm but at shows (and we did not do that many that year) he was very insecure.
I would always try to ask the judge before I start the round “if I need to turn it into a training round may I do so”?.
In this way it was my intention to compete in the class and would do the stays and often the scent exercise even if the ring exercises were hopeless. Every step forward we made even only a small one was a major achievement for us both which made me very pleased and gave my dog a little bit more confidence.
Eventually he qualified as a Cynophobia assistance dog which pleased me immensely as he had to overcome a lot of his problem issues.
In my opinion training rounds should only be used as a last resort.
How can you judge your improvements if you don’t see the scores coming down?
I am sad when I see the number of training rounds that now go on at shows. Firstly if those wanting to do training rounds didn’t enter the classes , the numbers of classes and judges needed would be reduced. If clubs had a manned training ring (with a judge) at their show where handlers paid a similar fee for the training ring as the class entry fee, clubs would not lose their income . If the dogs were entered NFC they could attend the show as normal and use the training ring

Elm Park Weekend 5th and 6th October  (iappleton) 08/10/2024 01:10

At last we can breathe a big sigh of relief now that our first show at our lovely new venue was a success. The weekend started with a slight hiccup, the camping ground was too wet for the big motorhomes so we had to throw the ring plan out of the window and start again. The Elm Park team worked extremely hard and soon had it sorted. Thanks to all the campers for parking as requested with no moans or complaints. The final ring plan ended up a little more cosy than we originally planned but apart from that I think it went very well. I am sure over the next few years we will be tweaking things to make it better for everyone.

First of all a big thank you to Beechwood for allowing us to hold our show at their lovely venue and for being such a great bunch of people to deal with. A big thank you to the Elm Park members who worked tirelessly Friday, Saturday and Sunday to make the show a success, well done guys. Also thanks as usual to John and Kath Westell and Sue Starr for helping out. To Lyn, Steve Parmiter, Les Willis, Mick and Lyn Johnson who aren't members but always lend a hand.

Thanks to Paula Kenny and Sandra Barnes who stepped in at the last minute to replace two judges who had to step down. Also thanks to Richard Kebble for being our Chief Steward.

Thank you to all our judges and stewards who gave up their day. To run this weekend we usually need around 70 plus judges/stewards. Without these lovely people there would not be an Elm Park weekend.

Congratulations to our ticket winners, Saturday - Trish Jones with ObCh Longwaves Cloudy Sky for winning the dog ticket and Victoria Cook with Lupitoonz Dance Monkey for winning the girls ticket and this was Victoria's first ticket ever - fabulous.
Sunday - Lorna Hilton with ObCh Zanyway Great Expectations for winning the dog ticket and Mary Ray with ObCh Sarkam Sings the Blues for winning the girls ticket.

Also congratulations to all the winners of the other classes.

So our first show at the new venue came to a close. The weather was fairly kind to us just a bit of drizzle on Sunday. We felt it was a great atmosphere and the Elm Park team hope everyone enjoyed the weekend with the show at the new venue. Those of us from Elm Park that camped finished off with a lovely meal at The Taz on Sunday evening - yum, yum.

See You all next year, when we can do it all again.

Julie

pre beginners/beginners - treats in the ring?  (suze2310) 11/09/2024 06:09

Hello, I want to do some obedience competitions with my dog. Just wondering what the rules are for carrying treats/toys in the ring?

Are these lower levels allowed to praise the dog mid comp? I have not competed for 20 odd years!

Thank you!

Hi, you'll find the G Regulation under the Misc menu on here. The rules are given for each class.

For example, in Pre-Beginner:

"In this class only incentives in the form of a toy or rewards are allowed to be carried by the handler in the competitive ring and may be given to the dog at the end of an exercise or in between exercises. Rewards include food which must be
carried in a small closed container during the exercises. The judge will designate an area in the competitive ring where food may be given to the dog by the handler."   (ObedienceUK) 15/09/2024 12:09

Louise Oxford has shared her simplified interpretation of the rules:

For competitors entered in lower classes (where food or a toy is allowed) I thought it would be helpful to share my interpretation of the rules about carrying and using rewards.

§ A silent toy and food can be used as rewards or motivators at the start and end of the test and in between exercises.

§ Toys and food in a sealed container may be carried by the handler but must be concealed in a pocket during the tests. They may not be carried in the hand.

§ There will be a designated area in the ring where food may be given and a table to put the food or toys on if preferred. If carrying a toy, you may reward anywhere in the ring as long as you are considerate to those working in neighbouring rings.

§ Verbal encouragement and extra commands can be used throughout the test.  (ObedienceUK) 03/10/2024 12:10

Judges marking  (gfullerton1) 24/07/2024 05:07

I’m still a newbie compared to some but I attend lots of shows to get experience with my dog. The more shows I attend the more confused I get regarding the Judge’s marking. Some Judges go to the quarter point, others seem to deduct many marks for something another Judge has deducted a point for. When a dog runs amok in or out of the ring or has to be reminded and cajoled, this seems fairly obvious. However at a show I was competing at recently, in my class there were quite a few who made hand contact with their dog and several who had a taught lead during the heel exercises. On what I’ve read both of these are marked quite significantly but weren’t necessarily reflected on the mark sheet. During my class my dog sat for a recall and as I left her, she briefly scratched and then resumed a sit immediately. The recall was thereafter good. Came directly, sat in front perfectly straight and a good finish. The deduction seemed quite significant. Therein lies the mystery for me. When a Judge qualifies, do they receive an indication of what is deemed a major fault, down to what is deemed minor. Is Judging more objective or subjective? What can someone who is fairly new to the sport do to understand the marking?

Hi I have read what you have written and quite understandably you are trying to understand the scoring system to be honest I wouldn't bother as every judge as their own way of judging and we see things handlers and bystanders don't and we mark things like this, what I will say is if you get marked for things you shouldn't be speak to the judge we are more than willing to explain, and as for dogs running a moke in lower classes we expect it to happen and it's marked but we don't usually deduct all points because we want to encourage newbies into sport not discourage them, how would you feel if you lost all your.points in 1 exercise? But most of us judges have been where you are so understand
Has for what I presume you think was a perfect recall if your didn't present straight might have been slightly crooked at present or she finished crooked it would have been marked,I as a judge and handler have been there
Good luck for future  (tralanas) 28/08/2024 11:08

CHESVALE OPEN SHOW - SHOW MANAGERS REPORT  (CarolS) 27/08/2024 02:08

CHESVALE DTC
OPEN SHOW 25TH AUGUST 2024
SHOW MANAGER’S REPORT

What a brilliant day.

After setting up in rain and wind, the weather gods were kind for show day with warm sunshine – perfect for humans and dogs. With only 5 rings (1 pre-beginner, 1 beginner and 3 novice) plus 2 training rings, we were able to have plenty of room for parking and exercising dogs.

There are always so many people involved in running a show and it is important that their efforts are noted, and they receive the praise they deserve.

Firstly, Clare Williams our club Honorary Secretary and show secretary. Without Clare the show could not take place as she does so much during the year up to the two shows we put on and then working like a trojan all day. So, a big thank you to her!

Team Chesvale is the best. From setting up on Saturday, arriving early Sunday morning to finish off making the showground perfect, managing the car parking and putting up tents. They do all of this with a smile on their face (possibly a grimace in some cases as we’re not as young as we were). Then after a long two days, they happily dismantled everything and stored it away. What a team! Jim Nokes, Norman Partridge, John Pepper, Keith Saunders, Alan Dyas, Steve Weston, Jane Byard, Paul Spencer.

Catering at Chesvale’s shows is renowned for being superb and this year did not disappoint. Fabulous food at lunch and then the most amazing cakes and cream teas for the afternoon. The catering team for lunch is Gail Nokes, Lynne Weston, Pauline Finn, Julia Yerrell and Stephanie Mayne. Afternoon teas were manned by Jo Dyas, Sally Partridge and Sharon Smith. Debs our competitor caterer also received glowing reports for the quality and cost of her food and drinks.

Wonderful Laura Wiley manned the training ring again and was busy all day! We supplied several chairs for those waiting to get Laura’s help and they were full all day. I know that the handlers were extremely grateful for Laura’s fantastic attitude and help. We also had a self-help ring which was also well used throughout the day. Thank you to Sheila Rodger for organising the waiting masses and taking the money. They took an amazing £126.00 for K9 Heroes which is our chosen charity for the show this year.

The tombola stall was well attended as usual and thanks to maggie Petit for manning the stall, taking £95.00 which will also go to K9 Heroes.

We had a surprise visit from members of the Gaddesdon branch of the Riding for the Disabled charity. They came to personally thank Chesvale for the donation of £1,000.00 we recently sent to them. A wonderful charity that really needs support for the great work they do.

My thanks must also go to the judges and their stewards. Sue Chambers who came to our rescue when Vanessa Sultana was unable to fulfil the appointment to judge pre-beginners (hope you’re better soon Vanessa). Carey Holah (beginners), Chris Milner, William Forest and Liz Jakeman (novice). Shows cannot run without committed judges who are prepared to give up their time, thank you for your time and your support of Chesvale DTC.

Adding a picture to your show report  (ObedienceUK) 18/08/2024 06:08

Members can now add a picture (only 1 per report) against their show reports.

You can only add it to your own reports whilst they are still on the NEW REPORTS list on the ObUK.net website.

When you create your report it will be saved with your username (so only applicable to members who are 'logged in' when they create their report).

Having created your report it will appear on the New Reports list and there will be a camera icon against it.

Click the camera icon to upload your picture. The limit on the size of your picture is 1,500 bytes (so slightly below 1.5MB).

IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS LET ME KNOW.
